The ancient Taoists observed that human beings are endowed with three precious treasures: jing (essence), chi (energy), and shen (spirit). To the degree that these gifts are nurtured and cultivated will determine the quality and quantity of a person's life. These treasures are represented by energy fields (lower, middle and upper tan tiens) that are intimately interconnected.

Essence (jing) is the energy of the physical body and the center of this field is about two inches below the navel. All of the tissues of the body are infused with this energy, and cultivation of postnatal jing is through proper nutrition and hydration, exercise, and rest.

Energy (chi) is the electromagnetic circuitry system which infuses every cell and function of the body, both within the physical structure, and emanating from the body. The center of this field is in the middle of the chest, between the nipples. Some masters have said that energy is like wind: wind is hard to see, but it is easy to see the effects of it. The same is true of energy. It is easy to observe someone with healthy, positive chi and easy to observe someone with sick, depressed chi. Energy can be cultivated through qi gong and energy healing, and is affected by cultivation of the other two treasures.

Spirit (shen) is the transcendent spirit, and the center of this field is the third eye (between the eyebrows). Representations of shen can be seen in depictions of saints with golden halos around their heads. Saints are not the only ones--all humans have this energy field, but the cultivation of it through meditation and contemplative practices, a calm and peaceful lifestyle, and ''correct thinking" determines the strength and power of your spirit to incarnate fully into the physical. It is known that spirit can been seen in the light of one's eyes and the vitality of one's being.

Maintaining balance and harmony of the Three Treasures is vital for creating health, happiness, and longevity. This can not be found in pills or quick fixes, but in daily and lifelong habits which support and nourish these precious gifts of life.
